Easy drainage!
Have a beautiful terra-cotta, ceramic or glazed container without drainage holes? You don’t have to skip planting it up — just add your own! Use a diamond bit and a high-power drill, such as an 18-volt model, to make clean holes and prevent breakage. Wear eye protection and don’t force the bit; just apply steady, gentle pressure.
To get a cut started, drill at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of your container, just like you see in the inset photo. Once you’ve penetrated the surface, angle the diamond bit to 90 degrees, like in the larger photo, to finish cutting. Adding a few drops of water prevents the bit from becoming too hot and causing fractures or breakage. For even drainage, add three ½-in.-wide holes an equal distance apart.
