Seed starting how-to
Starting seeds? Get much better germination rates when you nick the hard seed coat first. This lets in moisture faster and enables the germinating shoot to emerge easily. Just hold the seed firmly with tweezers and scratch the surface of the coat, like we did here, before planting in seed-starting mix.
If you can’t find what you want at your local garden center, this method works well for plants, such as lupine (Lupine spp. and hybrids), moonflower (Ipomoea alba), morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea), sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) and wisteria (Wisteria hybrids).
